General Audience
My questionnaire is going to see the difference between what genres teenagers like/watch most and what there parents like/ watch most. The questionnaire will also show how the different age groups find out about the latest films. The age groups I will mainly ask these questions are 13-19, 32-40 and 40-50.
My questions:
1. Your age group?

13-19
20-31
32-40
41-50
This result shows that the Questionnaire was taken by a variety of different aged people. This shows that the results will be diverse.
Yes
No
The results for this question fit in well with what the aim for the Questionnaire was. The aim for this questionnaire is to find out the differences between what teenagers and their parents watch, where they watch it and how they find out about it.
3. Where do you prefer to watch films the most?

Cinema
Home
Internet
This table shows that more teenagers go to the cinema to watch films then their parents do. This shows that teenagers life is more based around social encounters then their parents. The table shows that parents prefer to sit in their own homes and watch a film. This could be because they prefer to have alone time by themselves or with a special someone.
4. What genre do you prefer to watch? (e.g. Thriller, Romance, Comdey)

The garph shows that the most common genre is Comedy for both teenagers and their parents. This could be so they can escape the stress from real life.
5. Where do you find out about the latest films?

Trailers
Posters
Word of mouth
Online advertisments
Reviwes
Film Festivals
This graph shows that the most popular way of finding out about films for both teenagers and parents is by trailers. Thi sshows that both watch enough television to watch the trailers. This also shows that trailers do catch our eye.

Film noir is a term used to describe Hollywood crime dramas. Film noir became very popular in the early 1940s to the late 1950s. This was a popular thing because they was not a lot of money to spend on films after the war so they made small budget film noir films. Film noir films are normally crime films. Here are a few film noir films:
Out of the Past (1947)
The Maltese Falcon (1941)
Shadow of a Doubt (1943)
The Wrong Man (1956).
Film noir was the era that was associated with low key lighting. Low key lighting is a style of lighting used in photography, film and or television this creates a chiarosuro effect. Low key lighting is used to create shadows and evil effects. Low key lighting is also used to single out one person and to emphasize the person.
Raymond Borde and Etienne Chaumeton said “We'd be oversimplifying things in calling film noir oneiric, strange, erotic, ambivalent, and cruel” They stated in there book ‘Panorama du film noir américain’ that not every film noir film has all 5 attributes.
Film Noir has 5 main themes
Death
Greed
Self indulgence
Self forgiveness
Crime
Film noir outside the United States.
Some people may believe that film noir didn’t start in America and that it actually started outside the USA for example the French film called Pépé le Moko (1937) is classed as a film noir film. The French have been none to create film noir films before film noir was actually created. Here are a few French film noir films:
Rififi (1955)
Les Diaboliques (1955)
Quai des Orfèvres (1947)
There were also a lot of films filmed in Britain classed as film noir films here are a few more:
Night and the City (1950)
Stolen Face (1952)
They Made Me a Fugitive (1947)

The opening of ‘The Third Man’ starts with a very strong English voice over. The voice over talks about Vienna. In contrast to him talking about the Vienna war there is cheerful music playing in the background. This could symbolise the victory is for the winning country. When the man starts to talk about the black market he lowers his voice this shows that it is not acceptable and that people shouldn’t hear you talking about it.
‘The Third Man’ has footages from what seems to be news footage from the Vienna war this shows realization and relevant ness It also flicks between shots of places in Vienna. The beginning of ‘The Third Man’ seems to be more like a documentary’
The setting of ‘The Third Man’ is very gothic. We can tell this by the uses of architecture. The architecture of ‘The Third Man’ is very dark and mysterious. The use of churches shows the contract with good and evil. This has also been used with the staircase. The main character is shown to have little importance in the opening of ‘The Third Man’ by how he is low down on one floor of the staircase while the camera is on the stairs above. The staircase could imitate the distance between heaven and hell.
This is also show by the man who is cleaning the chandelier. He points to heaven and says ‘hell’ and then points to hell and says ‘heaven’.

The third man seems to be set in winter these cerates a very gothic film noir scene.
Lighting is used to show the sadness and the darkness. This is shown by the white faces at the funeral that seem to be surrounded by darkness and death. Dark vs. white has been used a lot in the opening scene of the third man. The scene with the floating body in the river is emphasized by how dark the body is and how light the water.

This is my final Advertisment.

Code and conductions:
I have called the perfume Liberty because liberty means freedom in French and I want the girls that buy liberty to feel free when they wear it. The target audience is teenage girls. I have shown this by using a teenage girl as the model for the perfume.
I have used natural lighting in the advert because it represents freedom. Natural things are normal free to be what they are. I have used a tree as the background for the advert because it symbolises growth and maturity. We believe that when we have grown up and become mature we can finally be free to spread our wings and be who we want to be. I wanted my perfume to show this. The model is wearing a white top which shows the innocence of teenager girls and it also help show that the photo was taken on a summery day.
I have put the product in the left hand corner so that it does not take over the picture but so it still stands out. The angel of the model is side on to the camera this gives the effect that she longs to run away. I have added different colours to the perfume bottle to show that no matter who you are, where you are or what you believe in Liberty is for everyone.
I have used a mist around the model which gives the impression that the model is dreaming or in a haze. I have used this because it tells the buy that with this perfume you will no longer need to dream you can actually be free.
The main genre of this product is adventure I have show this by the model looking away from the camera which shows she longs to be free.
Representation
The social group I have aimed for are teenage girls of any age/personality. The social grade of people who would buy this product is C1 and or C2 people. The reason I have aimed for the working class it because I believe they are more likely to buy this product than someone in grade A or B. I have also chosen this grade because there are far more people in these two grades than all of the others put together. The perfume Liberty is aimed for people from the age of 14 to 19 of any race.
Audience
I called the product Liberty because all teenagers wish to be free in one way or an other, and I thought liberty would give them a small chance to be free and be themselves. I aimed this for the teenage society because teenagers are always trying to impress and be something there not. If a teenage girl wears liberty I hope that she will feel free to be who she really wants to be and not what other people want her to be. The media interest of teenagers is very high as they want to catch up on the latest gossip/news of the celebrity world. This is another reason why I decided to have my target audience as teenagers. I would place my advert in all the well known teenage magazines like top of the pops, sugar, cosmopolitan, etc. Teenagers take up almost half of the world’s population so the word of Liberty would spread fast and it hopefully would be a instant hit with the teenage population.
Evaluation
The advertisement for Liberty is eye catching and you can see what the product is straight away the colours are fresh and bold the instantly make you want to read what it is called. But although this advertisement has its strengths it also has its weaknesses. The weaknesses of this advertisement are once you have seen it you won’t remember it. It doesn’t stand out and shock the view like many other adverts do. The advertisement does remind people of a teenage population not by just the model but by the colours. The colours are bright and electric but they are also plain. Over all I wouldn’t not remember this advert or stop flipping through a magazine if I saw it. It does not stand out or create an instant memory. I would not buy this product as I would not remember it.

Sin City
The opening of sin city starts with a black screen with the sound of a police siren. This immediately gives the impression of the films location in New York. Just as jazz music begins to play the black screen turns into a high angle shot of a woman wearing a red dress. The red dress is made to stand out because it is the only thing in this scene that is in colour. We assume that she is high up due to the balcony and bacause you can see tall buildings all around her. The voice over begins at 0.32 as the woman puts her arms around her, the voice over is describing what we as a audience is seeing.

Here are a few test advertisments

Advertisments I like and don't like.
I find this advert interesting because of how the women are almost pulling him apart. This is a sexual but classy appeal. This advert although I found interesting it doesn't really draw your eye to the product. You might think this was a advert for sex then a advert for aftershave.
The model in the left hand picture seems to be in a field we can guess this by the flower in her hair and the grass in the background. This picture also shows a very sexual use of the perfume but a innocence by how the model looks and acts. This draws us to believe that the perfume is a sexy but innocent scent.

This advert drawed my eye because the colours are very femine this shows the audiences straight way that this advert is for women. The model has her head lifted to emphosise her neck. Her hair could be blown away/ messy because she finally feels free to explore her own scent. The colours blend in with the model this gives the impression that the scent will make you the same all over. The perfume is hard to locate in this image. Even though the advert has a sophisticated look about it, it is very dull and does not really draw your eye to the product.
By Sara Disborough
Name of product: Highland Springs
Magazine: OK!
Date of issue: 15th July
CODES AND CONVENTIONS: Purpose and effect.
Image Used:

The advertisement has all the important information that is needed i.e. the name of the brand is in the bottom right hand side. This is highlighted because it is colour on a black banner. On the left hand side there is the highland spring’s website. This is in a big enough font to read but not too big to take over the picture. This is also on the black banner. In the centre of the black banner is the well known highland springs slogan ‘Now, that’s true love’ there is very little text on this advertisement but it means a lot. The text symbolises that you will never love anything or anyone as much as you love Highland Springs.
The model is sitting in the centre of the page with his body side on to the camera. His body language is very seductive, open and related. At first glance you may think him to be naked but when you look again you can see he is wearing a Tarzan/ape man costume. This as well as the surroundings shows that it is a very jungle Tarzan feel. This is shown by the monkey sitting by the models side, the trees and the lake.
Highland springs have used a black and white advertisement with the only colour being the bottle its self. This is a great technique because it draws our eye straight to the only coloured thing. We would immediately see that it is a highland spring’s advertisement.
The lighting coming from the left hand top corner gives the impression of the sun rising/setting in the west of the page. The light has landed onto the model which also emphasises him as well as the bottle itself.
REPRESENTAION:
The kind of world that is being represented in the advertisement is a hidden jungle (Tarzan) feel. This is a very erotic and surreal place because we haven’t seen anything actually like it but we know that it exists. Highland springs is advertising that there water is made from organic land. This is shown in the advert by the use of the jungle.
This type of advertisement could offend a person because of the small fact the man in the advert is half naked.
This is a stereotypical advert because some people could take it that highland springs is only for men as there is only a man in this advert. It also says that women are not the jungle type of people and that men are the ones that could live out in the jungle.
AUDIENCE:
The main audience would seem to be women and gay men in there mid 20’s to early 30 are who are of a working class/middle class occupation. This is shown because the man in the advert is half naked and the highland springs bottle looks expensive. This advertisement appeals to a niche audience because it is in a women’s magazine that all women buy. This advertisement is appealing because it gives women the desire of a particular life-style e.g. Tarzan type of man coming and taking you away.
INSTITUTIONS:
( I was very confused as to what I actually had to do is it about the advert or the magazine?)
Evaluation:
I choose this advertisement because I found it shocking and interesting. I found it interesting because of the black and white contrast with the colour. After looking for advertisements for days this was the only one that seemed to be perfect to talk about. It has objectification of men and monkeys. I wouldn’t buy this product at all as I don’t like water and I know how much it actually is, but I am not saying that I wouldn’t put it in a scrapbook.

Print Media
Radio Media
I am a big fan of heart. I love waking up to heart every morning because I always have its part of my daily routine waking up to Matt and Sarah at breakfast.
Music Industry
My favourite genre it pop/ pop rock. I am a big fan of artists like McFly, Jonas Brothers, Take that, Britney Spears etc. I listen to my music all the time and I either listen to it on my mp3 player or on BBC Iplayer or You Tube. My opinion of illegal downloading is simple if it is a song/album of great quality and is from a well known artist and you get it from a website for free then it is illegal downloading.
I believe that the music industry does effect how we dress and act. I think that it is a very effective part of the media, maybe even the most effective part. We act and dress like the people that we admire. For example people who like 50 cent might dress like him.
Video Games
I don’t really have a favourite video game but I do love to play Sims 2 but that is only for a few minutes because I get bored very easily and end up doing so history research or reading a book. I think that video games have a big effect on which we are as a person. Not all video games give the user a negative effect but some do. Games like Grand theft auto give the player a bad reflect on life. Someone who plays this game (mainly young people) could grow up thinking that if you run someone over they will just get back up and carry on with there life. This is not normally the case. Just because games that are rated 18 doesn’t mean that younger people wont play them. I believe that games like these should be band due to the fact that yes they maybe fun to play but to a little Childs mind its like the real world and i don’t think anyone really wants little children running around beating people up and running them over like in the game.
New Technology
I think that new technologies have increased our understanding of the world a lot. For example the internet can provide you with so much information and it is all at a click of a finger. The internet is a fun new way of learning facts you need to know. I am always on the internet either researching stuff for my homework, looking up things I find interesting or talking on msn to all my friends. Msn is a great way of communicating some people will disagree but I think its great because I can sit on msn talk to my friends and do my homework at the same time. For intense I am talking on msn and doing my homework. New technologies broaden how we watch TV and how we find out about the latest film. For instance if we miss a TV programme we can always go onto the website of the TV channel and watch it on there.
Television
I don’t really have a favourite television channel. I like them all. It mainly depends on what I’m in the mood for watching sometimes I want to watch Friends other times I want to watch The Tudors so it all depends on what type of mood I am in, this applies with genres to I does all depend on what mood I’m in sometimes I want to watch crime sometimes I want to watch romance and others comedy. My favourite advertisement is the Clearasil lipstick advert I find it very humorous and very clever. I think that this advert is something every girl wants. The advert has a hidden meaning behind it and that is love and that is why I like it.
My top 5 most memorable TV programmes are:
The Tudors
Friends
My Family
Gossip Girl
Demons
Feature Film
I don’t have a favourite genre because i like them all i find every them all interesting to watch. I am not to keen on war films that are full of blood and guts mainly because I think that they are a bit stupid and i don’t really like seeing people have there heads blown off. I believe this to be because i am deep down scared of people getting blown up because my dad works with bombs (In the RAF).
The films that i find most outstanding are:
10 thing I hate about you
Sweeny Todd
Twilight
I like to watch films at the cinema or at home. As long as the seat is comfy and i am watching a good film i don’t mind. I love Cineworld in bury because of the floor my feet stick to it and i love that part of going to the cinema that’s how i tell its a good cinema. I love going to the cinema with my friends and family. I love being in a group because you have so much fun and you can all talk about the film after.
Conclusion
It has been all over the news lately about a women who murdered her two teenage daughters as they slept. After reading so many news papers about this topic and reading all the different sides people have take it has most offened me that people believe that a mother could do this just to get back at her ex husband. I believe this to be fails due to the fact that i don’t believe any mother could hate her ex husband so much that she would kill her own children. I believe she was not in her right mind when she done this.
I have seen many different types of television programmes about the Henry VIII and i found Henry VIII the tyrant a very interesting and factual programme it was a two part series that told you about the life of one of the greatest (well known) English kings in history. In the programme it told us a lot of henrys past that i didn’t know me. Like the fact he was never meant to be king. This programme also showed me that Henry did have a sensitive side to him even though he killed many people because he could.
I have chosen to do media studies because i wish to either be a media studies teacher or to be a actress. I believed that media studies would be a great way to learn what goes on behind the camera and how much effort actually goes into the films we watch.
I like this advert because I think it is Unique and has a hidden meaning. To me this advert shows the innocence of teenagers and the innocent of love. It also shows that men/boys will do anything just to get the girl they want. This does not represent what really happens in real life but what happenes in a girl/womens mind. This advert is almost like a in sight into a womens wishes.
I like this advert because it always seems to make me smile when I'm sad or happy. It's just a advert that warms your soul. Children are the next generation and this advert shows that they are still only innocent beings and not truly ready for the open world.

Deadliest Sin
What i am going to do:
I am going to have 7 boys and 7 girls. Each will have a different role. They will be paired by the sin that they are. Depending on what sin they are depends on what colour they wear.
Lust = Blue
Gluttony = Orange
Greed = Yellow
Sloth = Light Blue
Wrath = Red
Envy = Green
Pride = Purple
And this is how I would set it out.
Lust (Dark Blue) would be climbing alover each other to show sexual tension they might do it like this.Greed (Yellow) would be either counting there money or fighting over money. like this
Sloth (Light Blue) would be lazing around under the tree like so
Wrath (red) Would literly be fighting each other like this
Envy (Green) Well I'm not actually sure so any ideas would be great.Pride (purple) Like Envy I have no idea.
Hope you like my idea
My Blog
I have created this blog to upload all the information I have and will use during my media studies course. On this blog I will put any ideas I have any homework I have done and any pictures I find very interesting. This blog will also contain pictures I have taken myself.
